Blue Red

(no subject)

I won Round Three Challenge of Season 1 at dog_eat_dog_lj. The round was to reply to posts that said 'Jump' with 'How high?'

Well done to the others who got through to the next round.

The next round is to write a short story based on a fairy tale in a week. I'm looking forward to this challenge but I'm also a bit scared because although I can write my first draft quite quickly I do usually spend a few weeks choosing exactly which words I want to use and editing it! Also it will be my first piece of writing in about fifteen months as I have read more this year than I ever have before. The other two competitors will probably be much better writers than me as I am pretty self taught. In the UK for a few years (children born about 1962 - 1968) they decided as a national experiment not to teach us English grammar, punctuation or spelling! I've actually learned more about writing since I've been on LJ and my f'list have given me tuition and given me something to practice writing for example writing in 3rd person or 1st person. As I've mentioned on here the one thing I do remember from class was my English teachers drilling into us 'not to write in I's because I's is lazy!' I have grown up with a real problem about writing fiction in 1st person. The first time I tried to do it, it ended up being 2nd person! As for punctuation I remember two lessons when I was 8. One about full stops and one about paragraphs - and that was my sum total of punctuation lessons!

Anyway I'm looking forward to reading what the other two people left in the contest write.
