When I was younger I collected vinyl records and I have about 5,000 singles and 1,000 LPs which I just can’t and don’t want to part with. During the week of my thirteenth birthday I bought the top 5 chart singles plus one other single that I really loved and I continued to do this for twenty two years until money became tighter.
I’m still always happy to adopt people’s unwanted records that they are planning to throw away and I love to find new songs that I have never heard before.
Now I seek out old “Now That’s What I Call Music” CDs at car book sales and charity shops - the enjoyment being that I will only buy it if it’s under £3!
Apart from not having an original Dickie Valentine “Christmas Alphabet” EP vinyl single, I also have a full set of UK Christmas Number 1s and Eurovision music (the Eurovision songs are all mp3s, but that’s fine by me) and both of these are now just a case of adding new songs each year.
Other than music, I collect antique glass, especially blue art glass. I think it has a real beauty and I love the way the light shines through. I would love to own a piece by Rene Laliequ and if I’m honest it would be great fun to find it in a £1 bargain box in a junk shop!!
I have also started looking out at car boot sales for an old dinner service called Ridgeway Home Maker that was sold cheaply in the 1950s, as I love the retro design of it. At the moment I only have three large plates, two smaller plates and a saucer! But it’s a start!!
